Summarized Position Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for installing, inspecting, reading, troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing residential water meters while supporting the City’s overall water metering and leak detection programs. The role includes performing water turn-ons and turn-offs at residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial properties; completing utility infrastructure locates; maintaining accurate documentation, communications, inventory, parts, and supplies; and conducting quarterly meter readings for billing purposes. This position involves safely performing work in accordance with established procedures, permits, and Occupational Health and Safety regulations, liaising with contractors and suppliers, and working collaboratively with Utility Operators to ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of the City’s water systems. Additional responsibilities include supporting the onboarding of new team members and undertaking other related duties as assigned.
Our Ideal Candidate:
- 3 years of experience in installation, repair and maintenance of water meters or in a related field
- Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) Certification Level I
- Basic First Aid
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Police Information Check
- Confined Space Awareness
- WHMIS 2015
- Class 5 BC Driver’s License
- Water Engineering Technology Diploma or similar (preferred)
- Cross Connection Control Tester and/or Inspector Certification (preferred)
- Experience with water meter reading hardware and software (preferred)
- Practical knowledge and experience of water metering programs
- Practical knowledge of plumbing and pipefitting practices including the use of related tools
- Proven mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience in a related field
- Possess strong customer service and inter-personal skills, exercising courtesy and tact in the exchange of routine information with members of the public
- Ability to maintain accurate records and effective written communications
- Knowledge of the use of a metal detector for the purpose of locating underground utilities
- Ability to work on elevated areas and in confined spaces by following applicable Safe Work Procedures
- Ability to understand and follow safe work guidelines, procedures and to work in a safe manner
- Sound experience and knowledge of computers including Microsoft Office Suite
- Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform manual work outside, in the presence of all types of weather conditions
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercise sound judgment, work effectively under pressure and within tight timelines
- Ability to work flexible hours
